Bringing creekside sit spots into PD

Each Friday I guide a 20-minute sit spot with Upper El by the willow-lined creek, focusing on quiet observation and leave-no-trace habits using simple recycled-paper journals… I’d like to build this into continuing education for our Montessori staff — has anyone taken a course or developed in-house training that covers outdoor risk assessment and child-led stewardship without a lot of gear?

Quick example: in our PD we start with a 3‑minute creekside “pause, scan, plan” hazard sweep, then co-write a simple “creek code” teachers adapt with students, using a one-page risk–benefit sheet we update each season. Small caveat: we cap adult sit spots at 10–12 minutes on day one so nobody twitches more than the willow leaves — want the template?

Building on @johnson44, we run a 15‑minute mock sit spot in PD where teachers rotate roles — risk spotter, stewardship lead, timekeeper — and debrief with a one‑page risk–benefit sheet they can reuse. For the willow‑lined creek, add a 60‑second “flow check” using a paint‑stick gauge with color bands the kids help set, then run your 20‑minute sit with the recycled‑paper journals. Only caveat: set a “feet stay above the willow line” boundary to protect banks while keeping it child‑led.
