Examples of hands-on math activities

I’ve been experimenting with various hands-on activities to teach addition and subtraction… For instance, using colored beads to represent different values really seems to help the kids visualize the concepts. I’m curious to hear what other practical methods have worked for you all, especially with older elementary students.

I’ve had great success using a simple number line made from masking tape on the floor. The kids really engage with it when they physically jump to the numbers or work together to solve addition and subtraction problems. It’s a low-cost way to get them moving and thinking about math, especially when they’re learning how to add bigger numbers.

But i totally get that frustration! I’ve used small cups filled with items like buttons or coins for addition and subtraction. The tactile experience helps them not just visualize but physically manipulate the quantities, which can sometimes drive the concepts home better than just beads.

Using different colored tape to create a huge grid on the floor for kids to hop on is a game changer! They can hop to the answer while practicing their math skills. It’s interactive, fun, and ties in nicely with what you mentioned about helping them visualize.
