My 7-minute rhythm reset

I start sessions by getting everyone walking the room in time — metronome at 92 BPM — then layering claps, snaps, and a simple call-and-response before anyone sings, and it loosens up even the stiffest shoulders. If you’ve tried something similar, do you stick with a click or swap to a shaker/loop to keep the groove alive?

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‌

I run the click for about 90 seconds, then crossfade to a low shaker loop with a touch of swing so it feels human — “click in, groove out.” If people start rushing, I ghost the click back at about -18 dB under the loop like training wheels; have you tried that?

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌

I switch to a human anchor after the first minute — pass a small shaker to one person and rotate it every 8 bars, so the pulse breathes but doesn’t drift; if the group’s green, I leave a whisper-click on ‘2’ and ‘4’ underneath. Love @tina_rod97’s crossfade — have you tried a quick 3–2 clave clap to lock things in before singing?

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌

Try a ‘gap click’: 2 bars on, 2 bars mute at 92 BPM; then layer konnakol?

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‌

I flip the click to “1-only” after about 40 seconds, then mute it and leave a barely-audible low tom every 8 bars — more mile markers than a pace car. @gina2965, ever tried slowly panning the shaker L→R to make folks listen across the room?
