Why we should care about social justice

I’m really interested in how older students can dive deeper into social justice issues. It’s not just about learning from textbooks; it’s about doing our own research and finding ways to make a difference in our communities. Has anyone found effective methods or resources that help connect what we learn in school to real-world issues — i’d love to hear your thoughts.

I started a small book club with some friends where we picked books on social justice topics. It really helped us dive deep into discussions and connect them to local issues, like the impact of gentrification in our neighborhoods. Anyone can find cool reads at local libraries, plus it’s free.

I totally agree that real-world engagement is crucial. I’ve found volunteering with local organizations can be super impactful. For instance, working with a food bank not only deepened my understanding of social issues like food insecurity but also helped me connect classroom concepts to actual needs in the community. It’s about rolling up our sleeves and taking action.

It’s so frustrating when people don’t see the importance of real-world connections. I once joined a community garden project that had a huge impact on local food access, and it was way more engaging than just reading about it in class. @mike_pet58, have you thought about starting a similar initiative? It can be eye-opening to see how grassroots efforts can make a real difference.
